Lately I’ve been thinking about the inherent beauty of everyday things.  Every morning I go for a walk with my pooch through the neighborhood. There’s a million things to notice but because we know the area so well I have a tendency to ignore the details. When you have a routine it’s hard to see the little differences that pop up every day unless you tell yourself to look closely. Lately, I’ve been making myself pull out my camera to capture some of these things. I stop and take pictures of anything that strikes me for any reason. Usually they’re mundane things I wouldn’t have normally noticed. Like a cluster of flowering weeds or the tops of grass poking out against the sky.

Then, when I have a moment and I’ll open up my everyday inspiration folder and just doodle. Sometimes it results in things that turn into something “real”, other times nothing interesting comes out of it. But either way it’s a good habit to get into.

Below are a few little doodles (and what inspired them)  that I saw some potential in. They may eventually get refined and turned into real patterns. For now, they’re just fun little doodles.

ps. Aren’t the colors in these photos fun? They turn my boring old reference photos taken on my iPhone into much more interesting and fun photos. I used an app called Plastic Bullet to make them.

as i am sure you will quickly learn, since last june (when i took a beginner’s knitting class at three kittens yarn shop) i have become an avid knitter. that said, as a knitter i am just a little a.d.d. and much prefer quick knits (hats and mittens, anyone?) to large projects, which is why i adore making things for all the babies i know.

and since my lovely friend and co-worker, kym is expecting her first baby any day now, i just couldn’t resist making this summer squash blossom hat for her little one.

i found the (free!) pattern on ravelry (if you are a knitter or crocheter and aren’t a part of this free community yet, get on it now!), though it’s also available here. it’s adorable and easy (if you can do a teeny bit of color work and an i cord), plus it’s done in a worsted weight yarn, so it knits up quickly.

i can’t wait to meet kym’s little one (and see him or her in this little hat too!).
