Hidden treasures
August 13, 2010

A few years ago, Jessica and I went on a little road trip to Wisconsin to pick up a little kelsey tabletop press. The man I bought it from had been a printer when he was younger and he’d been storing a few presses, type, etc in his basement for a long time.

Along with my press I loaded up a few boxes of type and other mysterious things. Those boxes have pretty much just sat quietly for the last few years being moved from place to place (much to my husband’s chagrin) but not really paid attention to, until now.

We’re doing a bit of end of summer cleaning and purging so we’ve been opening up old boxes and trying to figure out what to do with the contents. These boxes have been sitting quietly waiting their turn. Today I started poking around in the boxes and found a whole treasure trove of interesting things including these old ink tins. (still full of ink!)

They’re so cute. I have no clue what I will do with them but I just can’t bring myself to throw them away. Perhaps I’ll empty out the ink and use them as little boxes in my studio. They’re too awesome to not get a second life doing something.

farm boy brand party
August 11, 2010

have you heard of farm boy brand? (and farm girl?) if not, you need to check out their stuff right now. i became familiar with the brand a few years ago when my friend david started working there. and it probably goes without saying that i have been in love with their stuff ever since. cute, clever casual wear with great typography and a midwestern feel, it just doesn’t get much better than that.

bill and i were fortunate enough to be invited to their offices for a cocktail party last night and it was wonderful (no surprise there). the company was fantastic, the food was delicious, the music was great (breakout country duo thompson square did an acoustic set) and it was just a lot of fun.

one of my favorite things about farm boy is that they use honest-to-goodness farm kids as their models. a few of them were there last night and it was so much fun to see them view the shoot photos for the first time. i loved hearing the excitement in their voices as they told us about the shoot and what fun they had doing it.

so if you’re in the market for adorable casual clothes, i’d have to recommend this, this, this and this. oh, and definitely visit their popup store at the minnesota state fair if you go. it’s fantastic.

some more party eye candy:

the rooftop patio (with bill in the orange t shirt)

the view from the patio (i can see our studio!)

patio chairs. i love the troughs as tables!

david with a cutout. doesn’t he look excited? hehehe

I just love that shade of blue, and it’s incorporated in both pieces so they go very well together. I’m all about ceramics and anything that has a far eastern inspiration, especially when it has sparkly embellishments on it like my lucky elephant.

My Cozy Little Nook
August 9, 2010

This is the 2nd apartment I’ve ever lived in, but the first one I’ve lived in by myself. I must say I’m enjoying the independence it brings and the quaintness of this little old space in Menomonie, WI.

The kitchen is very “small”, or as I like to call it “Bauhaus”. I can literally crawl up and stand one foot on each counter at the same time. It’s nice though, since it’s just me, and I never have to move very far for what I need. So really it’s quite efficient. LOTS of cupboard space, and I just discovered a wooden pull-out cutting board last week!

I got the bed set from JCpenny.com. I first saw it in a Better Homes and Gardens magazine and when I went to look for it online it had already been put on clearance so I got the bedspread (which included shanties and bed skirt) and all the added decorative pillows for less than the original cost of the bedspread alone. In other words, I got a ridiculously good deal! It was meant to be.

Two Little Kittens
August 5, 2010

I live alone in a one bedroom apartment and it was kind of lonely for my rabbit and I. So, I went to the Dunn County Humane Society and adopted two little girls. I named them Isis (grey tabby) and Athena (brown tabby) and their personalities hold up to their names. Yep! That rabbit and the cats DO get along just fine!  I’ll post a picture of the rabbit another day, but for now, here are some pics of my new favorite models.

(almost) all my hermione hats! i’ve gifted many too!

the hermione hat has the rare distinction of being the very first hat i ever knit (a little more than a year ago, how time flies!) and the item i have knit the most. it is my absolute favorite, a perfect mix of cables and eyelets. i’ve made it with everything from super cheap acrylic yarn (the blue one) to nice yarn (the gold one) and it always turns out great. it’s a quick little knit that looks rather impressive (cables and lace always impress, i think) and makes a great gift. i’ve varied the ribbing on nearly every one i’ve knit (i think the twisted rib is my favorite, so delicate with the eyelets) and it always turns out great.

but i think my favorite thing about it is that the designer saw the hat on the hermione granger character in one of the harry potter movies and designed it by looking at a photo. what resourcefulness! one thing to note, if you’re thinking of making a hermione hat and prefer a “beanie” style like i do, knit the child size or else it will come down to your nose!

Simple Little Lovely Things
August 3, 2010

I always cold brew a giant pitcher of herbal berry tea and some sort of white or green tea. Last time I brewed a pitcher-full I carelessly removed the tea bags and set them in an empty glass sitting in the window so I wouldn’t make a mess. I noticed afterwords how intricate something so simple can turn out to be– the way the light shown through the glass, the colors of the wet tea bags and how they laid together in the glass. I couldn’t help but  admire it.

Oops. I forgot to post my favorite thing I found in St. Peter on Friday! I am a horrible blogger. Hopefully you will all forgive me because I am posting it today!

On our way out of St. Peter we wandered into an antique store that was getting ready to close. There were all sorts of fun books and glass bottles and such. Jessica found a cute vintage necklace and while she went away to pay, I found this:

Isn’t it great? I love vintage tins but I’ve never seen one like this. I’m smitten.

listening to npr, i learned that photojournalist steve mccurry (the man who shot this memorable image of an afghani woman) recently shot and developed the last roll of kodachrome film (though i am sure there are a few people who still have rolls tucked away). according to npr, national geographic will do a feature on his last photos with the film, so stay tuned…

side note: doesn’t it seem strange to think that the era of film is ending so quickly? as much as i love my digital camera and my camera phone (not to mention all the filters and photoshop actions that simulate film grain and color), it’s more than a bit sad for me to consider that most people (especially kids!) won’t know the joy of waving a polaroid around while it develops or the joy of picking up film at the drug store…
